Zip Runner Version 2.1 Documentation
════════════════════════════════════
════════════════════════════════════
ZIP RUNNER UPDATE INFORMATION:
═════════════════════════════
Version 2.0 was found to contain a glitch which would not let you
install archives of similar names such as, TEST.ZIP and TEST1.ZIP. This
bug has been corrected. You will notice that two additional files are
contained in this package:
ZIPRUN.EXE
ZIPRUN.DOC
LHARUN.EXE New!
ARJRUN.EXE New!
LHARUN and ARJRUN function EXACTLY the same as ZIPRUN, with the exception
of the fact that they work only with .lzh and .arj files respectively.
The new runners utilize the same command line switches, mouse and key
interfaces etc. In order for these two programs to work, LHA.EXE (not
LH.EXE or LHARC.EXE!!!) or ARJ.EXE, must be in the directory with your
archives, or in your path. You can rename LH or LHARC to LHA. The
REGISTERED version of ZIP RUNNER now contains support for all three
formats in one program!
NEW IN VERSION 2.0 & 2.1
════════════════════════
These NEW versions of ZIP RUNNER have the same outward appearance but an
entirely new interface and several enhancements! You can now use your
mouse to turn pages or run the program of your choice! Please read on
for more information, and please REGISTER to gain the added benefit of
swapping ZIP RUNNER to high memory! It may also make you feel GOOD to
do the right thing, and support starving software authors.
PURPOSE:
═══════
The sole purpose of ZIP RUNNER is to save space on your hard drive.
Many of the newer programs, especially games from vendors such as
Apogee, consume over a megabyte of hard drive space when they are
in their uncompressed form. ZIP RUNNER allows a user to store
programs in compressed format, but run them with ease from a menu.
SETUP:
═════
To setup ZIP RUNNER, unzip it to the same directory as your zipped files
and run it. Since no files have been installed on the menu at this time,
will see the main ZIP RUNNER menu with only two options displayed: QUIT
and REVISE. Press "R" and you will go directly to the ADD a file section
of the REVISE menu. Here you will be asked if you want ZIP RUNNER to
automatically find the zipped file names for you. If you don't, Press "N"
and you can manually enter them. Once a zip file name is entered ZIP RUNNER
will display the first executable file name it finds in the zip, and ask
you if this is the executable you would like to run when the file is
unzipped. If it is, press "Y" or RETURN, and your first file is now
installed. All future files are installed the same way. If you have more
than one executable file in your zip, or want to run a .COM file, you can
answer NO to the prompt and enter the executable or com file name manually.
You will be asked to confirm. When asked for the names, enter them WITH or
WITHOUT the ".EXE" or ".ZIP" extensions. If you make a mistake no harm will
be done, but your program will not run until the bogus name is replaced
with the correct one. Once you have entered the names, you may elect to
unzip to a ram disk. This speeds up the unzipping process many times and is
highly recommended if you have enough memory. Press "C" for change, and
press "D" for drive. Now enter the letter of your ram drive. ZIP RUNNER
will write out its information to a small text file called "ZIPRUN.LUP",
and no further installation is required. Once installed, ZIP RUNNER will
always go directly to the menu when it is run. The text file, ZIPRUN.LUP,
must be in the same directory as ZIPRUN.EXE. The first line is the number
of zips in the file, the second, is the letter of the drive you will unzip
to. If you plan to unzip to the current drive, an 'x' will be found in on
this line. After the drive letter, the lines alternate between Zip filenames
(all in caps) and the executable names. (lower case) There is no conceivable
reason for editing the look up file, as the drive and file names can be
ADDED, DELETED and CHANGED using the REVISE option on the main menu. DO NOT
use a word processor to edit the file. Up to 32 files (two pages) can be
entered on the menu.
RUNNING THE PROGRAM:
═══════════════════
In order for ZIP RUNNER to do its job, PKUNZIP.EXE and PKZIP.EXE MUST BE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
EITHER IN YOUR PATH, OR IN THE DIRECTORY WHICH CONTAINS YOUR ZIPPED FILES.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
ZIP RUNNER will now display a menu of zipped files to choose from. Simply
press the letter key next to the filename you want to run, and ZIP RUNNER
goes to work. If you have installed more than 16 zips, a second page will
be available on the menu. Press the "T" key toggle the pages, or use the
page up/down keys. For those of you who don't like the tweeting noise, press
the "S" key, which will toggle the sound on and off. The ESCAPE key will
either quit the revise menu or quit the program from the main menu. Use it
instead of "B"ack or "Q"uit if this is easier to remember. The "Z" key
toggles the REZIP option and the status of REZIP will be displayed at the
top of the main menu. Since rezipping takes quite a bit of time, the default
status is "OFF", which means that the files will NOT be rezipped and saved
after program completion. If you have a game or other program which could
possibly save a file for later use, you should toggle the REZIP option to
"ON", BEFORE you run the program. REZIP can be set to ON automatically by
starting the program with the "r" switch, i.e. type "ZIPRUN R" or
"ziprun r" at the DOS command prompt. Likewise, the sound can be switched
off with the "s" switch. "ziprun r s" would start ZIP RUNNER with ths
sound off and the REZIP feature turned on. The "r" and "s" switches need
not be in this order.
USING THE MOUSE:
════════════════
Once ZIP RUNNER is installed, those of you who have a mouse attached to
your computer system can run programs by clicking on them with the left
mouse button, or (if you have more than 16 zips on your menu) change pages
by clicking the right mouse button.
WHAT IT DOES:
════════════
First and foremost, ZIP RUNNER creates a new directory, "\__zr__", to which
the files will be unzipped, BEFORE it does anything else. When you make your
choice, the files are unzipped to either the current drive or the ram drive
if you have selected one. ZIP RUNNER then passes the executable file name
(which you entered for that zip file) to the command line, and the program
runs. When you terminate the program you selected, you will once again be
greeted with the ZIP RUNNER menu. By this time, the sub directory CREATED
by ZIP RUNNER, and all files contained therein, will have been deleted, and
ZIP RUNNER will be waiting to run another program. The last option on the
menu, "Revise" lets you ADD, CHANGE, or DELETE files on the menu. Just
follow the prompts and all should be well. You will be asked to confirm
adds, deletes, or changes, and at this time you may answer NO to the prompt
and be returned to the main revise prompt. Also shown with the revise prompt
are the free disk space of your chosen unzip drive, and the amount of
available conventional memory. If you change drives, the free disk space of
the new drive will be displayed. Press the "B"ack or ESC keys while in the
Revise menu, and you will be returned to the main menu. When you decide to
quit ZIP RUNNER, you will find yourself in the directory in which you
started when ZIP RUNNER terminates.
MEMORY CONSIDERATIONS:
══════════════════════
At present, the unregistered version of ZIP RUNNER uses about 38K of
conventional memory. The registered version swaps ZIP RUNNER into high
memory while the daughter program is running, and uses only 2.5K of
conventional memory.
HOW MUCH DISK SPACE WILL THIS SAVE?
═══════════════════════════════════
Consider this; one Apogee game, #1WOLF3D requires 1,318,256 bytes of
hard drive space in uncompressed form. In zipped format the same file
resides in only 708,200 bytes, a savings of over 610,000 bytes!
RAM DISKS SAVE TIME?
════════════════════
Files unzip and run on my ram disk in about 25% of the time it takes to
do the same job on my IDE 105 MEG hard drive, and file deletion is MUCH
quicker!
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS:
══════════════════
(1)
Many programs, especially some of the newer games, require an installation
of their own before they can be run. These programs should be installed
in the proper directory (or on ram disk) then rezipped, before they are
added to the ZIP RUNNER menu. Take this opportunity to lose excess baggage
such as BBS messages, unnecessary DOC files etceteras, before rezipping.
(2)
Some programs may require more memory than is available with unregistered
version of ZIP RUNNER running in the background. To solve this problem you
can register ZIP RUNNER!
(3)
There may not be enough free disk space on your hard drive or ram disk.
To check this or your current free memory, press the "R"evise key and check
the display above the menu. To solve this problem, zip up more of your files
and install multiple copies of ZIP RUNNER.
(4)
While testing the program, I ran across a zipped file, #1COSMO, which had a
bogus .EXE string in the zip. This string was displayed by ZIP RUNNER as
the executable file name... In this case I had to manually enter the
correct file name before the program would execute. There may be a few
more zipped files like this out there, so be aware and ready to enter the
right name. To correct this problem, unzip the file and check the executable
name. Compare it to the executable name in the ZIPRUN.LUP file. If there
is a difference, change the name in the LUP file to match that of the one
in the zip. You can do this from ZIP RUNNER by choosing "[C]hange" and
"[F]ile" from the REVISE menu.
IS IT FREE?
═══════════
NO!
ARE THERE ADVANTAGES TO REGISTERING?
════════════════════════════════════
YES!
The registered version of ZIP RUNNER swaps itself into high memory while
other programs are running, thus giving nearly all free conventional memory
to the daughter program!
Registered users can feel free to make suggestions, bug reports or what have
you. (No one else can AFFORD to squwak!)
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
══════════════════════
The registration fee is $15.00 American.
WHERE DO I SEND IT?

THANKS!
═══════
Many thanks to my Beta Testers, John Martin, Cindy Mitchell, and Chuck Hunt.
I think beta testers isn't quite appropriate because all these people also
provided many good ideas and lots of useful input. But, if there are any
problems with the program, Now you know who to blame! <G>
Thanks also to John Wagner, author of IMPROCES, for providing some great
ideas, many useful programming hints.
This is my first commercial program written in Turbo C, and it has been a
learning experience!
Last but not least, THANKS to my wife, Kathi...
